Group Committee

Scouting is a family activity. The group belongs to everyone, not just the leaders or the committee members. To run a great scout group it takes a team of enthusiastic and dedicated individuals.

The leaders play their role by running great weekly programs and undertaking additional exciting activities. But to run the group we need a strong group committee with a broad range of skills. Everything we do and contribute helps to shape and develop our group which in turn helps provide a great program for our youth members.

The scout group belongs to all families, not just one or two, therefore parents are expected to help out with activities, travel, fundraising and more. A great way you can contribute to the group and have a voice it to join the Group Committee as either a general member or take up a specific role.

The committee generally meet once a month on a Thursday night during the scout program. We put out a reminder to families via TeamApp a few days before so please keep an eye out for the notification. Everyone is welcome to come along and contribute in any way you can.

Below are our current roles and the positions we’d love to have filled.

  • Group Chair - Steve Rothberg - steven@rothberg.com.au
  • Group Secretary - Howard Manns - howiemanns@gmail.com
  • Group Treasurer - David Logan - treasurer.5thballarat@scoutsvictoria.com.au

Fees - How much does Scouts Cost?

Don’t think, 'how much does it cost?', rather, consider that you are investing in the future of your child.

The 5th Ballarat Scout Group has a yearly fee of $500 which covers the period of 1 April – 31 March, our billing cycle. Yearly invoices are sent out in February each year and are payable over 3 terms, with the first invoice by the middle of March. There is a second and subsequent sibling discount of $50 a year. If you join half way through the billing cycle then fees are charged at a pro rata rate.

There is an initial joining fee of $30 which covers the cost of a scarf, woggle, badge progress book and initial uniform badges. We also ask for the majority of the Scouts Victoria fee as outlined below.

Most camps and major events do cost extra however we do our best to keep this to a minimum to cover the event running costs.

The breakdown of the $500 annual group fees are as follows:

  • Scouts Victoria Registration fee - $260/year paid at census March 31
  • Ballarat District Scouts Levee - $10/year
  • Materials & Activities fees (subs) for sections - $20/youth member/term
  • General Group Fees - $150/year

The General Group Fee covers general running costs (electricity, gas, hall insurance, scarves, badges, leader training & uniforms, equipment & supplies, hall maintenance and much more).

Major Events

Major events are a large part of the scouting experience. They provide a great opportunity for youth members to challenge themselves both physically and emotionally. To go above and beyond the every day and take on new experiences.

They are often ‘Once in a Lifetime’ opportunities not to be missed.

Major events range from state based activities through to national and international events, allowing our youth to expand their horizons even further.

This year we've had Venturers go to Ingite - New Zealand Venture, Kandestage International Scouting Event in Switzerland, 25th World Jambouree in South Korea and Venture 24 later in the year.

How to Join

Firstly make contact via our contact form or email the group leader at gl.5thballarat@scoutsvictoria.com.au to learn more about the best section for your youth and meeting night information.

Your child can try-out Scouting for three nights without obligation - all you need to do is complete a form and provide medical details for the first meeting to provide immediate insurance cover through Scouts Australia.

Once you’ve decided scouting is for you we’ll start the registration process.

Fundraising

Fundraising is as much a part of scouting as camping and hiking. This might include fundraising for hall maintenance and camping gear upgrades and activity/event fees.

Each year we aim to run 2 Bunnings BBQs and ask for parent support to run these events. Generally they yield significant funds for our group and only need take a few hours of your time.

The Monster Raffle is a school and scout based raffle run throughout the year with major prizes. The first prize is generally a car. You can support the 5th Ballarat Scout Group by purchasing tickets here.

If you have any ideas or suggestions for possible fundraising activities please get in touch.
